The new art season is almost underway and for art enthusiasts in the capital, that means most eyes are looking forward to Abu Dhabi Art happening in the first week of November. Here Alanood Al Hammadi, Senior Exhibitor Relations tells us why we should be even more excited about the fair this year.

Q: Who is the main target audience when you are putting together the programme for Abu Dhabi Art?

A: We not only focus on commercial aspects but the non-commercial aspects of the fair when we think about programming. The audience is growing, we have collectors, families, art lovers and many children so when we plan our programme we try to accommodate the tastes of everyone. So, you will definitely see something you like when you come to the fair. We have not only art but design and performing art, it is really amazing how it is being put together.

Q: What would you say is one thing not to miss this year?

A: This year we are introducing many new things but it is the sections that expand into the city that are really special. Our performing arts programme Durub Al Tawaya, that was launched last year is even bigger this year and also with Beyond, we will be installing large art works and sculptures in the city, it is really exciting this year for this.

Q: Why is it important to spread your reach across the city?

A: Abu Dhabi Art is such an amazing celebration of art and culture that happens for four days and this is a nice opportunity for as many people as possible to be involved in the programme. We are inviting people to come to Saadiyat and we are going to them in the city, we are also taking our fair visitors to the city so it is a two-way street. It was well received last year and it is beautiful how the city accommodates us.

Q: What about the galleries?

A: Galleries, of course, make up the heart of the fair and this year we have 50 galleries coming from 30 cities in 20 countries. We always have a good return rate and we are really excited to have most of our galleries returning as well as some new ones too. One notable one is Taymour Grahne from New York, who is participating in the Bidaya section for new galleries.

Q: Last year, as we all know there was trouble with the weather, have you made any changes to the structure of the buildings to ensure the same doesn’t happen again?

A: This year we will not be using the UAE Pavilion building. Instead we are going to have all the galleries under one roof – Manarat Al Saadiyat – this is more efficient for the audience and the galleries.

Q: If someone is visiting the fair for the first time this year, what is your advice?

A: You don’t have to be a collector or a buyer of art to enjoy Abu Dhabi Art. We have 600 works by 400 artists from around the world and there is so much to learn. We also have workshops, talks and other programmes that everyone is welcome to attend and it is all for free. I would encourage everyone to come and check it out. tTrough our website, we are reachable by phone and email to ask any questions.
