A HIT: In a tailored, form-fitting Reem Acra gown Allison Janney looked incredible. The choice of bright red was perfect against her blonde skin tone, while the dramatic slashed, floor length sleeves, not only kept her silhouette long, but kept the focus on her all important diamond jewellery. EPA
A MISS: We all love Salma Hayek, and we all adore Gucci, yet somehow together it never quite seems to work. Last night Hayek wore a custom made tiered Gucci gown, with lashings of diamante around her shoulders. With her poise and incredible beauty Hayek should have looked magnificent, however, the cheap sparkly pink fabric seriously lets this down. AFP
A HIT: Maya Rudolph had a great evening. Not only for her presenting skills alongside Tiffany Haddish (there are now calls for the pair to host next year's awards) but in her choice of look too. A bright red, high-necked jumpsuit may not be most people’s first choice, but she nailed this difficult -and lets face it- severe look. With her hair pulled back and interesting earrings, she left her freckles and humour steal the show. AFP
A MISS: Normally Miss Stone never puts a foot wrong, but her Louis Vuitton tuxedo felt out of place here. While we love that Emma was pushing the boundaries of what makes an Oscar worthy look by opting for trousers, somehow this mismatched jacket and pants just feel short of the mark. Even the contrasting bow at the waist, nor the bare skin underneath could redeem it. EPA
A HIT: Black Panther actress Danai Gurira looked sublime in a simple, pale pink sheath dress. By Gabriela Hearst, this backless gown had a pleated demi-train falling from the waist, that was as elegant as it was enviable. The perfect finish? The tiara style painting that Gurira wore around the back of her head. Bravo. AP
A MISS: Andra Day. Oh dear oh dear oh dear. We are baffled how a Zac Posen dress can go so horribly wrong, but this pink and grey ruched thing, with corseting and enormous sleeves was just a disaster. Less is more Posen, Less is more.
A HIT: Octavia Spencer looked fabulous in a darkest green Brandon Maxwell gown. With pleats falling around her shoulders, and a nipped in waist, this satin dress was evening glamour. Reuters
A MISS: We're not quite sure what happened here, but this huge floral Christian Siriano number was perhaps not the best choice for Whoopi Goldberg. Although Siriano knows how to flatter curves with his excellent cutting, this dress has the unfortunate effect of making her look like someone wearing their curtains. EPA
NEUTRAL TONES: Emily Blunt looked ethereal in Schiaparelli Haute Couture, with a high neckline, and ruched cap sleeves. The almost transluscent ash-blue colour was finished with lace detailing. Reuters
NEUTRAL TONES: Singer and actress Zendaya looked incredible in a mocha-toned, Grecian one sleeved Giambattista Valli Couture dress. Sweeping her hair up and off the neck, she let her chandelier Bvlgari earrings take pride of place. EPA
NEUTRAL TONES: Allison Williams looked every inch the movie star, in a nude Giorgio Armani creation that she teamed with white diamonds and soft waves. With elegant beading around her shoulders and bodice, this was an exquisite choice against her chestnut hair. EPA
NEUTRAL TONES: Camilla Alves, wife of actor Matthew McConaughey wore a creamy white off the shoulder gown, nude make up and a string of rubies around her neck. The handkerchief hem, that gave glimpses of layers of netting gave just the right amount of interest to an otherwise delightfully understated look. EPA
NEUTRAL TONES: Saoirse Ronan went for a palest pink sheath dress, with a large bow on the back, that perfectly suited her pale colouring. EPA
NEUTRAL TONES: Of course no Academy Awards would be complete without huge, dreamy gowns, and this year Mira Sorvino arrived looking like a princess in an elaborate confection of nude tulle overlayed with applique flowers. One shouldered, full skirted, and with a long train, she offset the drama of it all with barely there make up, and a simple side parting in her loose hair. EPA
BOLD COLOURS: Ashley Judd opted for an intense purple gown, with a strapless bodice and plain skirt. Deceptively simple, the gown let Judd’s impressive diamond jewellery take the limelight. EPA
BOLD COLOURS: Jennifer Garner also chose blue, in the shape of a dazzling blue rucked Atleier Versace number. With a complex neck details that turned into a train, it was a classic red carpet moment. AFP
BOLD COLOURS: Another big theme for gowns was bold colours, which saw Nicole Kidman step out in the most talked about dress of the evening, an Armani Prive deep blue strapless look, slashed to the thigh, and with a structured bow across the waistline. With a trademark plunging neckline that is classic Armani, the choice of colour did draw criticism for Kidman, but it was nice to see her in something other than the tasteful nudes she usually wears. EPA
BOLD COLOURS: The brightest dress of the evening had to be on newcomer Eiza Gonzalez, who picked a canary yellow, backless, form fitting dress that looked sensational. Reuters
METALLICS: The Black Panther’s Lupita Nyong’o went for gold in asymmetric Atelier Versace. EPA
METALLICS: Sandra Bullock opted for a halter neck black and gold gown by Louis Vuitton. Reuters
METALLICS: Jennifer Lawrence meanwhile dressed down her muted golden Christian Dior Pre-Fall dress with loose wavy hair and a matte lipstick. EPA
METALLICS: With a metallic theme this season unfolding, Wonder Woman Gal Gadot wore a shimmering Givenchy Spring 2018 Haute Couture gown. EPA
THE LADS: Sam Rockwell - who has scooped Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing - looked sharp in a grey silk tuxedo, and a crisp white shirt. Wearing a Time to Change pin, and (and how adorable is this?) cufflinks with the name of his long term partner Leslie Bibb, the choice of dove grey really worked with his complexion. EPA
THE LADS: Baby Driver actor Ansel Elgort went for an immaculately cut, green-y black velvet tuxedo by Tom Ford, complete with dress shirt and bow tie. A tricky fabric to wear, velvet can easily look lumpy, but Elgort, with his matinee idol good looks and slight quiff made it look effortless. AFP
THE LADS: Willem Dafoe always looks great in a suit, and this year’s choice of a midnight blue Prada tuxedo was impecible. Teamed with a black shirt and tie, and contrasting black lapels, as ever it was a lesson in style. AFP
THE LADS: Double Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro - who picked up statues for Best Director and Best Picture for The Shape of Water - chose a traditional midnight blue tuxedo for the event, and despite trousers trimmed with satin and a satin lapel, del Toro still managed to look charmingly crumpled. His trousers were too long, and his bowtie was crooked, and even his glasses just reflected all the camera flashes, but with two Academy Awards to his name, we all forgive him. Reuters
TWO WOMEN WHO WORE 'AN OLD' DRESS: While the escapism is half the attraction, isn’t it refreshing to find stars who still think and act like normal people? Tiffany Haddish is one. Haddish charmed us all by wearing the same dress to three events (for an SNL appearance, a Girls Trip Premiere and on the Oscars stage). The piece in question is a rather delicious white, halter neck gown, with a split thigh and heavy embellishment around the neck. By Alexander McQueen, it looks amazing on her and at US$4,000, she admits it was a big purchase. And while others may secretly swallow the cost and pretend funds are limitless, Haddish has announced to the world she is intent on getting her money’s worth. So, while she arrived at last night's bash wearing a traditional Eritrean robe (in memory of her late father), she then changed into her fail-safe McQueen to take to the stage. And the best thing? Both her and her co-presenter Maya Rudolph walked on stage in comfy slippers, carrying their high heels in hand. Bless. AP
TWO WOMEN WHO WORE 'AN OLD' DRESS: Rita Moreno, the 86 year old veteran of films like The King and I, wore exactly the same gown she wore in 1962 to accept the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in West Side Story. Moreno decided to give it another spin, this time recutting it to be strapless, but with the same magnificent jacquard woven skirt, with great golden roundals. Mixing it with long opera gloves, and simple headband and a heavy collar necklace, she looked, quite simply, fabulous. As the rest of us struggle to get into last year's jeans, that she could slip into a dress she last wore fifty six years ago is in itself worthy of an award.
