US airline ban on electronics is misguided

  • English
  • Arabic

The American strategy to make its airlines more profitable while trying to restrict business by Middle East airlines is short-sighted (US bans to dominate Arabian Travel Market, April 22). The United States will realise this in the future.

John Paravalos, Dubai

Why doesn’t Emirates increase capacity to its European hubs and improve code-share transactions such as through Milan to key US hubs? These connections in Europe would stymie the laptop regulations.

It has great passenger capacity and they could market this to European hubs as an economic boon.

Barghouti’s place is with Mandela

Those convicted during the Nazi regime and leaders such as Nelson Mandela, who spent most of his adult life in prison, were innocent people calling for peace and freedom for their people (Newsmaker: Marwan Barghouti, April 21). Marwan Barghouti's crime was to call for freedom and the end of the ugliest occupation in history.

He will receive the same accolade for his achievements as Mandela despite all efforts by Israel to silence him.

A tight situation for expatriates

Above all else, education and health care need to be affordable (Squeeze on jobs and pay forces parents to find more affordable schools, April 23). The cost of both have gone up significantly. How can people afford to spend so much when their salaries have not risen? Many families are splitting while people are becoming depressed. This is affecting the quality of work.

Shakila Mohammed, Al Ain

The main reason school fees went up was because many parents did not care to raise their voice against the increase since they received an education allowance from their employers. Top KHDA ratings give schools a free hand to increase fees. Now that people are losing jobs, what’s the point in talking about it?

Don’t spoil the waterfront area

I agree with the views of Denis Wallaston on the Sports City Arzanah project (Sports city plan is shocking, April 24).

This waterfront area is one of the very last areas of peace and natural serenity left in Abu Dhabi, where you can walk by the sea without concrete and artificial landscape surrounding you.

Please leave it alone. We already live in a concrete jungle.

I dread the day they bulldoze the lovely trees and ruin the beach, turning it into yet another grim, grey area of building land.

Man’s act of bravery laudable

What an amazing act of bravery by Ismail Khamis, who did not think about his own safety as he rushed back and forth into his burning home to rescue his family (Dubai fire hero's grief for lost daughter, April 13).

That he kept jumping from the first floor to the ground until both his legs were broken speaks volumes. I feel sorry that his darling daughter didn’t make it.

I offer heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Heaven has gained a special little angel.

Belinda Wallington, Dubai

These incidents make us think twice about the safety of our homes. An emergency exit should be in place on the upper floor so that in case of a fire, rescue operations will be easier while family members can help themselves before civil defence arrives. I hope we can avoid this kind of tragedy in the future. A precious life has been lost. May Allah give her family patience and strength to bear the loss.
