The biography pages of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were altered on the US State Department website, making it seem as though their resignations were imminent on Monday night.
Officials told BuzzFeed News that a disgruntled employee made the change.
Mr Trump's page showed an empty biography except for a single line: “Donald J Trump's term ended on 2021-01-11 19:49.00."
Mr Pence's page was also blank apart from text saying: “Michael R Pence's term ended on 2021-01-11 19:44.22.”
The changes sparked questions on social media when first noticed.
BuzzFeed also reported Secretary of State Mike Pompeo started an internal investigation into the incident.
Mr Trump is facing calls to resign after supporters stormed the US Capitol in a deadly riot on January 6.
Mr Pence is facing pressure from senators and representatives to invoke the 25th Amendment, which would move forward the removal of the president from office.
On Tuesday, the House is voting on a resolution that would require a decision from Mr Pence on the 25th Amendment and impeachment articles.
