Jailed British-Iranian mother Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe says she will go on a three-day hunger strike to protest prisoner treatment in an Iranian prison, including being refused access to doctors and medication.
Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who is serving a five-year prison term in Tehran, will go on an extendable three-day strike with Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist.
In a joint letter published on Wednesday, the two women decry the lack of access to medical attention, which they say is in breach of international and Iranian law.
Both women have reported medical conditions. Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe has suffered from depression, panic attacks and insomnia. In August 2018 she collapsed twice, reportedly over having to return to prison after being released for three days, during which time she saw her four-year-old daughter Gabriella.
The 40-year-old was arrested in Tehran airport in 2016 on charges of espionage, which she denies, and sentenced to five years in Evin Prison in Tehran.

During that time she was working as a business administrator for the charity wing of Thomson Reuters. But Iranian media has accused her of trying to topple the Iranian regime.
Her case has caused a diplomatic rift between London and Tehran, her release becoming a key metric of success for British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.
Supporters of the charity worker have suggested that an unpaid bill for a multi-million dollar arms deal from nearly 40 years ago has prevented her release.
Ms Mohammadi is the Vice President of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre, the organisation which published the joint letter. She has been periodically imprisoned since 1998 and suffers from an epilepsy-like disease, which causes her to lose control of her muscles.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

The design
The protective shell is covered in solar panels to make use of light and produce energy. This will drastically reduce energy loss.
More than 80 per cent of the energy consumed by the French pavilion will be produced by the sun.
The architecture will control light sources to provide a highly insulated and airtight building.
The forecourt is protected from the sun and the plants will refresh the inner spaces.
A micro water treatment plant will recycle used water to supply the irrigation for the plants and to flush the toilets. This will reduce the pavilion’s need for fresh water by 30 per cent.
Energy-saving equipment will be used for all lighting and projections.
Beyond its use for the expo, the pavilion will be easy to dismantle and reuse the material.
Some elements of the metal frame can be prefabricated in a factory.
From architects to sound technicians and construction companies, a group of experts from 10 companies have created the pavilion.
Work will begin in May; the first stone will be laid in Dubai in the second quarter of 2019.
Construction of the pavilion will take 17 months from May 2019 to September 2020.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.
