DUBAI // Two women and a baby were injured when a gas canister exploded in an apartment in Al Khail Gate on Wednesday morning.

Both women were transferred to Rashid Hospital in a critical condition. The baby sustained very minor injuries, according to Dubai Police.

“The operations room received a call at 11.23am that a gas tank exploded on the fifth floor of residential building 39,” said a Civil Defence spokesman. “Two other apartments were affected by the blast as well as the side of a nearby building.”

He said the building was evacuated and residents, whose apartments were not on the fifth floor, returned to their homes by 1.41pm.

“Those living on the fifth floor have been provided with temporary accommodation,” added the spokesman.

Lt Col Ahmed Burqibah, deputy director of search and rescue at Dubai Police, said investigations into the incident were under way.

“We were informed that there were two women and a baby missing when we arrived to the scene, which took us six minutes,” he said. “The baby was found with very minor injuries, and then we found the other two women under some rubble.”
