DUBAI // A jobless woman broke into a flat and stole jewellery worth half a million dirhams and Dh175,000 in cash, prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court.

K Y, 36, from Turkey, denied the charge of burglary. “I didn’t steal anything nor did I do anything wrong,” K Y told judges.

Prosecutors said that on September 29, 2013, K Y broke into a flat in Al Qusais – after damaging the front door – forced open drawers in the bedroom and stole cash, nine diamond and gold sets as well as 13 rings, 27 bracelets, and eight pendants worth Dh500,000.

Victim D N, a 40-year-old Iraqi, said that on the day of the incident she had left home to take her mother to hospital.

“When we retuned two hours later, the door’s lock was broken, the lights were on and the apartment was a mess,” she said.

She said she checked her bedroom and found the drawers forced open and jewellery missing. “They also took Dh175,000 in cash,” she said.

D N called police who arrived at the flat and dusted for fingerprints. “The fingerprints were searched on the system and matched K Y’s prints,” said policeman S M, 39.

It was unclear why the case took two years to get to court.

A verdict is expected on February 10.
