The volunteers aiming to make Abu Dhabi's Special Olympics the best ever

The countdown to the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi is well and truly on - and a fresh call has been made for more volunteers to help make the event the biggest and best ever.

More than 7,500 athletes from more than 170 countries will flock to the capital next March for the Special Olymics' debut in the Middle East.

Organisers say it will be the biggest games in the event's 50-year history - and 20,000 volunteers are needed to make it a golden success.

A drive for more helpers to get in the Olympic spirit was launched at Yas Mall at the weekend.

A video has been released to coincide with the call for support, with volunteers expressing their pride and joy at being part of the Special Olympics.

Young volunteers and athletes talk about  giving back to the community, making new friends and understanding the athletic skills and talent of people with special needs.

The number of countries already confirmed is the highest in the 50-year history of the Special Olympics.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the games said it was keen for as many athletes with special needs from all over the globe to be given the opportunity to show off their skills.

The games will run from March 14 to 21.
