DUBAI// An unemployed man denied attempting to rape a woman in his flat and told a court that he only assaulted her after she threw a bottle of vodka at him.

Prosecutors told the Dubai Criminal Court that Emirati AJ, 37, locked tourist AK, from Kyrgyzstan, in his home and tried to rape her before assaulting her because she refused to have sex with him.

AK said she first met a male friend at a hotel before they all went with AJ to his home.

“We entered his home at 2am then my friend left the house and told me to wait for him. AJ came out and told me to drink more alcohol before he attacked me,” said AK, whose age was not stated in records.

She told prosecutors that AJ was drunk and slapped her and pulled her to force her to drink.

“The alcohol fell on my face and hair then he forced himself on me and tried to rape me,” the tourist said.

AK said AJ locked the front door, hid the keys and her mobile phone. “He told me that I will be his wife for a week. Afterwards he said he will kill me and hide my body.”

Prosecutors said that the victim managed to find her phone and call police.

“We found her waving a stick through the bathroom window. She told us she had been assaulted and locked up inside,” said policeman FM.

Officers broke into the house and found AJ drunk and AK bleeding.

At the Dubai Criminal Court, AJ denied charges of attempted rape, assault, issuing threats and holding AK against her will. He admitted to consuming alcohol.

The next hearing is set for July 12.
