ABU DHABI // Two thousand Emirati students from the Abu Dhabi Vocational Education and Training Institute will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for having the most number of people carry a flag.
The bid will take place from 8am to 2pm on Sunday at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club and will require that the students carry a UAE flag measuring two kilometres in length and five meters in width.
“This event means more than just breaking a world record but serves as a symbol of loyalty of young Emiratis to their home country,” said Dr Addel Al Ameri, managing director at Adveti. “Since the founding of the UAE, it has created its mark by breaking world records in various domains.”
The current record was set in Italy in 2011, where 1,795 participants carried a 1.797km-long and 4.8 metre-wide flag.
“We are very proud to be a part of breaking a Guinness World Record particularly when UAE is involved,” said Adnan Sultan Al Nuaimi, managing director of the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club. “Also, 2,000 Emirati students breaking the record adds flavour and excitement to the event.”
He said it showed the younger generations desire “to help their country reach new heights.”
The challenge is being conducted as part of the 43rd UAE National Day celebrations.
