President Sheikh Khalifa sent a cable of condolences to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the leader of Kazakhstan, after a plane crash that claimed at least 12 lives.

A Bek Air passenger jet with 98 people on board crashed into a building shortly after take-off from Almaty International Airport on Friday morning, leaving dozens more injured.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, also sent messages to the Kazakh president, state news agency Wam reported.

On Sunday, officials said technical failure, pilot error and the weather were being considered as possible causes of the crash.

The plane apparently struggled to get off the ground, with its tail striking the runway twice during take-off.

Forty-nine people remained in hospital as of Sunday.
