ABU DHABI // Ready to drive to work? Think again. Why not cycle instead?
Tuesday’s #cycletoworkuae day has fired the imagination of companies, organisations and individuals, from people who are already cycling enthusiasts to others who feel the time is right to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
On Monday the chairman of the Department of Transport, Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun, threw his weight behind our initiative. “Let’s all put ourselves in touch with the beauty of our capital closer and more often by riding bicycles,” he said.
Sheikh Sultan stressed the importance of safety, which is at the heart of the initiative. Cyclists should wear high-visibility clothing and a helmet, and stay aware of what is around them.
For one day only, to support #cycletoworkuae, traffic authorities will treat cyclists as pedestrians. That means you can cycle safely to work on the pavement – just look out for pedestrians on two legs rather than two wheels.
For those with a long commute, there are park-and-cycle spots at the entrance to Khalifa Park and at Gate 1 on the Corniche, opposite Al Hilal Bank – so you can drive part of the way and complete your journey to work by bicycle.
There’s never been a better day to get in the saddle!
