DUBAI // Cooler temperatures and firmer ground makes winter the perfect time to venture out into the desert, and quad biking is a great way to experience it.

But like any motorsport, there are risks and the desert can be a thrilling, yet unforgiving, environment.

Quad bikes are considered motorcycles and riders need to have the correct licence to drive them legally.

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has offered guidance to quad bike riders to help reduce accidents and increase their enjoyment while riding in the desert.

They advise riders to get expert advice on the size of vehicle they intend to use to ensure it fits their capabilities.

They also advised riders to wear a helmet at all times, which can reduce the risk of head injuries by up to 85 per cent. Quad bikers are advised to stick to designated areas, avoid high speeds or doing acrobatic stunts and to stop riding when they feel tired.

Thomas Edelmann, from Road Safety UAE, said quad bikers must ensure they have the right credentials to avoid prosecution if things go wrong.

“For the use of motorcycles and quad bikes off-road, we want to underline the following: make sure you have the proper driving licence for your vehicle, make sure you and your vehicle are insured properly and contact your insurance provider.

“Always wear protective gear and, when venturing out into the desert, never go alone and adhere to the tips and tricks for desert driving.”
