An opportunistic thief stole three cars left by owners with their engines running while they went shopping in Ajman.

Ajman Police received reports of the vehicle crimes earlier this week.

All three cars were taken in front of a row of shops in the Al Nuaimia area of the emirate.

Police did not disclose whether the offences took place over a period of days or on the same date.

Officers quickly identified the suspected car thief and made an arrest.

“They stepped out for few minutes to buy some needs, and came back to find their cars gone,” said Lt Col Ahmed Al Nuaimi, director of Ajman police’s criminal investigations department.

“A team of investigators was able to quickly identify the suspect and collect accurate information about the incident,”

A 19-year-old man was arrested in Sharjah and admitted to stealing the cars. He was referred to the public prosecution.

All three cars were found to be in his possession and were in good condition.

Police urged motorists to always ensure their cars are secured before they step out of them.
