Record year for public transport in Dubai

DUBAI // Passengers made a record 539.5 million journeys on Dubai’s public transport system last year, an increase of more than eight million from 2014.

There was an average of about 1.5 million journeys a day last year, up from an average of 1.475 million in 2014.

December was the busiest month, with more than 48 million journeys on public transport. The highest number of passenger journeys, 1,859,320, was recorded on December 31.

The Roads and Transport Authority said public transport’s share of all means of transport rose to 15 per cent last year from 6 per cent in 2006. It aimed to increase the figure to 20 per cent by 2020 and 30 per cent by 2030.

Passengers on the metro red and green lines made 178.6 million journeys last year, up from 164.3 million in 2014, and there were 4.07 million passenger journeys on the Dubai tram.

There were 134.7 million passenger journeys on public buses last year, down from 148 million in 2014.

On marine transport (abras, water buses, water taxis and ferries) there were a record 14.42 million passenger journeys, up from 13.26 million in 2014. Taxis made more than 103 million trips last year, and there were 207.5 million passenger journeys.
