ABU DHABI // Abu Dhabi Police have blamed rainy weather for several separate crashes in Abu Dhabi that left one person dead and others injured.

One person died and several others sustained severe injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash in the Saih Al Sidirah tunnel in the outbound direction, police said on Sunday.

Col Mohammed Al Humairi, head of the Abu Dhabi traffic department, said several crashes occurred because of weather conditions and rainfall.

Most were caused by a failure to consider road conditions and leaving insufficient distance between vehicles, he said.

He urged motorists to reduce speed during heavy rains, remain cautious and focused, be wary of surprises on the road, and leave sufficient distance between vehicles.

Three people sustained moderate injuries in another crash, on the Sweihan-Abu Dhabi road, involving a bus with 15 passengers.

In a collision involving two vehicles on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road, before the canal bridge, one person sustained moderate injuries and another was severely injured.

Col Nasser Al Maskari, director of operations at Abu Dhabi Police, said the operations room received more than 5,900 calls amid the rainy weather, including more than 1,700 in Abu Dhabi and 350 in Al Ain.
