ABU DHABI // More than 7,000 fines were handed out to motorists for driving at more than 60kmph over the speed limit on the Abu Dhabi-Ghuwaifat highway, the emirate’s police have said.
The fines were handed out between January 1 and October 1. Also during that same period 454 fines were issued for driving outside the heavy vehicle lane, 171 for failure to wear a seatbelt, 221 for failure to observe sufficient distance between vehicles, 453 for bad tyres, 122 for using mobile phones while driving, and 23 fines for not complying with safety regulations, said the Abu Dhabi Police traffic and patrols directorate.
Lt Col Jamal Al Amir, head of public relations at the directorate, said a road awareness campaign in Arabic, English and Urdu titled ‘safe driving and life safety’ aimed to raise awareness of drivers of oil tankers and heavy vehicles about the hazards of traffic accidents. The campaign reached 3,700 driver, ADCO workers and their families in the Western Region.
