ABU DHABI // Etihad Airways has suspended flights to and from Chennai until December 31 because flooding has closed the Indian city’s airport.

In a statement, the airline said the measures were taken because of “the extended closure of Chennai International Airport as a result of the ongoing floods”.

Meanwhile, Emirates announced it would resume services to Chennai International Airport on Tuesday 8 December.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and awaiting for official confirmation of the airport’s reopening to resume normal operations thereafter,” the statement said.

The airline said passengers who were due to fly to Chennai during this time could either change their date of travel or fly to another Indian airport.

Chennai and the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu have been hit by the heaviest rainfall in more than 100 years displacing tens of thousands of people from their homes and causing at least 269 deaths.
