ABU DHABI // New surveillance cameras installed throughout Abu Dhabi emirate led to a decrease in crashes caused by motorists running red lights, police said.

The number of accidents decreased by 29 per cent in the past eight months, down from 76 to 54 during the same period last year.

The cameras were installed as part of a plan to improve road safety, said Brig Ali Al Dhaheri, director general of central operations at Abu Dhabi Police.

Police said the thermal, infrared cameras cover more than five lanes in each directions and can catch motorists who jump red lights, use wrong lanes, park on pedestrian crossings, speed, illegally overtake other vehicles and make U-turns in wrong lanes.

The cameras caught 6,350 red-light running violations during the same period this year.

Running red lights is considered a serious violation. Penalties include a Dh800 fine, the impounding of the vehicle for 15 days and eight demerit points.
