88 die in 1,000 accidents on Dubai roads

DUBAI // Eighty-eight people died in just over 1,000 accidents on Dubai's roads in the first five months of the year.
Seven accidents resulting in one death and 10 injuries involved unlicensed drivers aged between 14 and 17. The minimum age for obtaining a driving licence is 18.
Most car crashes were caused by sudden swerving, the most common traffic offence accounting for 238 accidents and 31 deaths, and tailgating, which caused 214 accidents resulting in 12 deaths. Ten people died in 113 accidents caused by driver error.
Speeding caused six deaths, and four people were killed when drivers ran red lights.
Five deaths were caused by drivers who did not properly check before joining another road, four as a result of inattention and one after a tyre fell off a moving vehicle.
Two people died in four accidents involving exhausted drivers, some of whom fell asleep at the wheel, and a further two deaths and three injuries were caused by exploding tyres.
The largest single number of road traffic incidents, 266, involved people aged between 19 and 30, leading to 49 deaths and 402 injuries. People aged 31 to 40 were the second most likely to be involved in an accident, with 22 dead and 252 injured in 177 accidents.
The safest group of drivers, aged 41 and older, were involved in 121 accidents that left 16 dead and 182 injured.
