ABU DHABI // Forty new radars will become operational on eight motorways as of next week, the traffic and patrols directorate of Abu Dhabi Police said.

Captain Ahmed Abdullah Al Muheri, the head of traffic safety, told Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National, that the roads that were equipped with new radars are: Al Gweifat, Al Ajban, Abu Dhabi-Dubai, Abu Dhabi-Al Ain, Yas-Al Saadiyat, Al Mafraq-Al Shahama, Al Raha Beach and Al Shahinat Truck Road.

Capt Al Muheri explained that the increase in the number of radars is part of a comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety, which is based on five main elements: architecture, awareness, control, assessment and quick response. These five indices are used to set speed limits on all roads in the capital and to roll out awareness and control programmes.

These join the 10 new cameras that were fitted to traffic lights in the capital last week, bringing the number of equipped junctions to 36. Those devices used state-of-the-art infrared, no-flash technology to capture offences.

Capt Al Muheri also said that these radars will be added to the 40 radars that were installed and operated on a number of roads in Abu Dhabi last November, bringing the number of new radars in two months to 80.
