Speed causes 90 per cent of traffic accidents in Dubai, according to Col Saif Al Mazroui, director of Dubai Traffic Police. Speaking during a visit to patients at Rashid Hospital who sustained injuries in traffic accidents, Col Al Mazroui said that most road accident victims were between the ages of 20 and 30. His visit was an effort to raise traffic rules awareness, particularly wearing seat belts and observing speed limits. He added that most accidents involving recreational motorcycles are fatal because bikers drive at speeds in excess of 100 kph without protective clothing. Complainants about reckless motorcycle driving have increased recently, he said. According to police statistics, there were 22 rollover motorcycle accidents in the winter, in which 28 people were injured, 14 severely.
