SHARJAH // Visitors are being urged to capture the vivid colours and light of the annual Sharjah Light Festival – and stand to win a Dh5,000 prize.

The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority is asking people to share on Instagram their best memories, either photos or by video, of the festival.

Visitors have until 3pm on Thursday to send in their selections.

The three winning photographs and one winning video will be selected by an expert panel of judges.

Each winner will receive the Dh5,000 cash prize and a chance to see their works displayed on the authority’s official social-media channels.

To take part, follow the official Instagram account (@shjtourism). All entries must mention @shjtourism and use the festival’s hashtag #SLF.

The Sharjah Light Festival, the first event of its kind in the Middle East, attracts tens of thousands of tourists from across the region and the world every year.

“For nine glorious days, the emirate of Sharjah will once again wear a new robe of exquisite beauty decorated with the best of oriental art and colours, celebrating Sharjah’s Islamic civilisation and legacy of our ancestors,” said Mohammed Al Noman, chairman of the authority.

The festival turns a spotlight on Sharjah’s celebrated Islamic architectural legacy and heritage, and tells the emirate’s story using art and cutting-edge lighting technology.

The nine-day show, now in its fourth year, began on February 6, with several new attractions being added this year.

Launched in collaboration with the Emirates Photography Society, the Sharjah Light Festival competition is aimed at encouraging photography enthusiasts.

The festival is free to attend and runs daily from 7.30pm onwards.
