SHARJAH // The first youth council was named this week, giving the country’s third-largest emirate a powerful new voice.

The appointments, announced by Sharjah Executive Council and Emirates Youth Council this week, followed similar developments in Fujairah and Ajman.

Shamma Al Mazrui, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, and chairwoman of the Emirates Youth Council, said the UAE was moving towards a sustainable, knowledge-based future and youth was a key element in reaching that goal.

“The UAE is a young country that is well aware that listening to youth and investing in their skills and abilities will facilitate the path towards the future,” said Ms Al Mazrui.

Newly-appointed Sharjah Youth Council member Sultan Al Shamsi, 20, an American University of Sharjah finance student, said: “We need to lure more youth to take part in the planning and building of our country, they need to be involved more in community work and bring forth their ideas.”

Fatima bin Ashour, 22, said the appointments would help to build constructive and positive thinking among her generation.

“Involving the youth will help them gain needed knowledge in fields like politics and the economy,” she said.
