SHARJAH // Solar-powered wi-fi bins were set up in the Heart of Sharjah district on Thursday.

Ten first-of-their-kind wi-fi-supported bins have been deployed, each equipped with sensors to detect when it is full and alert authorities to dispatch a team to collect the rubbish.

The bins also provide open wi-fi connections to the public, and the solar panels give energy to an internal compactor, which allows the bins to collect five times more refuse before needing to be emptied, according to Bee’ah, the environmental and waste management company.

The new bins are part of the first phase, with several hundred more to roll out across Sharjah and the UAE.

Khaled Al Huraimel, the chief executive of Bee’ah, said: “Bee’ah is proud to be leading the way in this area and to be the first in the world to deploy this type of technology; this is also in line with Sharjah’s vision and aim to become the environmental capital of the Middle East.”
