Ramadan: UAE charity distributes 35,000 iftar meals to workers every day

A UAE charity is distributing tens of thousands of iftar meals to low-income workers at their accommodation throughout Ramadan.

Dar Al Ber Society is planning on delivering 60,000 meals to labourers who would have typically relied on mosques for iftar meals but cannot get them this year after they were closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Packages of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are being delivered to labour accommodation across Dubai, including Jebel Ali, Sonapur, Al Quoz and Dubai Investments Park.

So far, the organisation has been able to deliver daily meals to more than 35,000 labourers. It aims to increase this to 60,000 people fed daily.

“Providing food to the needy is one of the main focus of Dar Al Ber Society's humanitarian activities. We decided to help labourers affected by the present circumstances,” said Dr Hisham Al Zahrani, deputy director of the social sector at Dar Al Ber Society.

The organisation is also distributing hygiene kits, consisting of sanitisers, masks, soaps, toothpastes and toothbrushes, to the workers.

“We would like to thank Dar Al Ber Society for providing us with Iftar meals at our doorsteps. Now we get food inside our rooms without going out of our camp. This is a big relief for all of us at this time”, said Abdul, a supervisor at a labour accommodation in Al Quoz,
