ABU DHABI // The Federal Supreme Court has upheld a life prison sentence for an Emirati who joined a terrorist organisation in Syria.
The State Security Circuit at the court overruled the 29-year-old's appeal and required him to pay the court fees, reported Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.
The Abu Dhabi Federal Appeal Court had sentenced the defendant in February to life in prison for joining Ahrar Al Sham and fighting alongside the terrorist group.
The State Security Prosecution had accused him of joining the group prior to July 22, 2015, Aletihad reported.
Attorney Abdulqader Al Haithami had represented the defendant in a previous hearing. Mr Al Haithami had requested his client’s acquittal, arguing that when the defendant joined the organisation, it was not included in the list of terrorist groups released by the Cabinet.
