Final results of tests on watermelon samples taken from UAE markets have not been completed, but no health risks have so far been confirmed, according to the Ministry of Environment and Water.
Sultan Alwan, assistant undersecretary at the ministry, said earlier tests conducted on Thursday showed the melons contained traces of old fruit beetles.
He said the ministry would soon announce the final results of the tests to reassure the community. Members of the public had complained about holes in watermelons found across the country. Rumors spread on social media causing public concern.
Mr Alwan said there was no presence of live bugs in the fruit and added that rumours about harmful substances injected into the fruit were untrue.
