ABU DHABI // A midwife, accused of consuming drugs, said the hospital she worked for framed her because she pointed out their medical errors.
MM, from Egypt, was accused of leaving a delivery operation to inject herself with drugs inside the bathroom.
Upon testing her urine sample, she was found to have consumed hashish and morphine.
She told the Criminal Court that she graduated as a nurse from the Higher Colleges of Technology and then started working for the medical centre that reported her.
“I detected many medical errors since I started working there and used to point them out,” she told the court.
Her bosses moved her to another section to work as a midwife hoping she would stop pointing out their mistakes, she claimed.
She continued to point out their errors.
“One infant even died after birth because of a medical error and the mother sued them,” she explained.
On the day of the incident she was carrying the injections they were using on a women giving birth and she felt tired because she suffers asthma.
“I went to the bathroom and left the injections outside.”
The hospital claimed she was using the injections inside the bathroom.
She presented medical prescriptions that show she is undergoing morphine treatment. They were accredited by a dean in Al Minoofeya University in Egypt.
“What does the university have to do with this?” asked the judge.
MM explained that the medical centre she went to in Egypt was part of the university.
She added that she was continuing her treatment at the hospital she worked for in the capital.
“What about the hashish? There are no medical prescriptions for that?” asked the judge.
She said she was living with her brother and his family and she had no business interfering in what they consumed in the house.
“I need the court to appoint me a lawyer. My husband’s salary is Dh3,000 a month and we cannot afford a lawyer.”
The couple has a two year old daughter and he is now the sole provider for the family, she said.
The court said it will give its decision regarding the lawyer and the adjournment at a later date.
