Men accused of stealing cables worth Dh200,000, Dubai court hears

DUBAI // Three jobless men are accused of stealing electric cables valued at Dh200,000 from a hospital construction site.

The Pakistanis, aged 29, 30 and 35, denied a charge of theft when they appeared at the Dubai Criminal Court.

Prosecutors said on May 12 this year, the men used a cutter to take sections the cables from the Al Amal hospital site in Lihbab.

A Jordanian electric engineer, 32, said the theft went unnoticed because the men only cut parts of the cables leaving the rest.

“I was informed of the theft by a police officer who came to the site with one of the defendants,” he said.

A 31-year-old Emirati police officer said he received several reports of cable thefts in different parts of Dubai. Investigations lead to the three men who were found to be involved in the thefts and were arrested.

“During questioning they confessed to stealing cables from several locations including that of the hospital construction site,” said the officer.

A verdict is expected on November 11.
