A man has been sentenced to a year in jail for repeatedly ramming a police patrol car and attempting to run over an officer to escape arrest.

The incident happened in Dubai’s International City on March 3 this year as two officers searched for a stolen vehicle.

Catching sight of a man getting into the missing Honda Civic, police manoeuvred their car to stop the vehicle leaving.

But instead of surrendering to officers, the 25-year-old Pakistani man repeatedly reversed into police as he tried to escape the scene.

“The vehicle was in the car park of a residential building and we saw the accused getting into the driver’s seat,” one officer told the court.

“Being trapped between our car and another vehicle from front, the accused started reversing and hitting our car.

“I opened the door to the driver’s side and tried to control him but he didn’t stop ramming the patrol and almost ran me over in the process.

“He threw me in the air and I landed far from the patrol car bleeding heavily.”

Despite his injuries the officer ran back to the stolen vehicle and successfully pulled the man out of the car.

“My colleague, while bleeding, was able to pull him out and I rushed to his aid,” said the second policeman.

In court last month, the defendant denied charges of assault, endangering the officers’ lives and damaging property.

He was convicted of all charges and will be deported after completing his sentence.
