DUBAI // A 35-year-old Frenchman was sentenced to life in jail after he was found guilty of possessing drugs to sell.

Dubai Criminal Court convicted M Y of having 66.5g of cocaine, which he intended to sell.

The Frenchman was arrested after a tip-off came to Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics officers by another Frenchman identified as D P.

The latter was arrested at his Burj Khalifa apartment for using drugs and, during questioning, he told investigators that he bought his drugs from M Y.

“We arrested M Y on May 18 last year after another Frenchman who was arrested for using drugs told us that M Y sold him the drugs,” said policeman M A.

When M Y was apprehended, police found the drugs hidden in boxes of Panadol painkillers and folic acid.

Police officer S Y said in records that M Y confessed to selling a gram of cocaine for Dh1,000. On Tuesday morning, the court handed him a life sentence and ordered his deportation after the completion of his prison term.

However, the verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.
