ABU DHABI // A man was sent to hospital for two weeks as a result of skull injuries sustained in a fight with his brother-in-law, the criminal court heard.
N Y and his brother-in-law, M A, both Emiratis, are accused of attacking one another outside N Y’s house. N Y told the court that M A came to the house and demanded to see his son, N Y’s nephew.
“When I stepped outside to talk to him, we started quarrelling, then he punched me in the chest and I fell unconscious,” said N Y. “While I was unconscious he took a stone and hit my head with it.”
The court saw photos of stitches across his head taken four hours after surgery.
“Are you OK now? Can you live and see normally?” asked Chief Justice Idris bin Mansour. “No, I still suffer headaches,” said N Y.
N Y’s lawyer requested temporary compensation for the defendant’s damages worth Dh25,000. N Y denied the accusation that he attacked M A.
“I did not attack him, I was defending myself,” N Y said. “[M A’s] finger or nail was broken and he accused me of causing it.”
Once a verdict is final, compensation claims are forwarded to the civil court for examination, and the final amount is specified accordingly.
N Y also claimed that M A had raped his sister and she became pregnant.
As N Y’s lawyer prepared to present his case, M A’s father requested to speak.
“I would also like to appoint a lawyer for my son. We request an adjournment,” the father said.
The case was adjourned until November 22.
