RAK // A man has been arrested in a sting operation for trying to sell 31 gold coins for a total of Dh22m.

Police in Ras Al Khaimah said the suspect, a 33-year-old Arab, told potential buyers the coins were “pieces of antiquity”.

In fact, the coins were 18 and 21 carat each, with a market value of Dh12,600.

Major Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Qassimi, head of RAK police’s organized crimes section, said an arrest was made after an informant played the role of a buyer who wanted the coins.

During questioning, the suspect told police the coins were entrusted to him by an Emirati who had asked him to find buyers and that he would get a share if he sold them.

The Emirati man was arrested and questioned and the case file was transferred to authorities to take legal procedures as necessary.
