ABU DHABI // A man accused of molesting a girl in lift has told the Criminal Court he cannot remember the incident because he was too drunk at the time.

R, from India, said he only remembers kissing the girl, who was under the age of 14, on the cheek.

His defence attorney Hadeya Al Hammadi argued that her client did not have any criminal intent because he was in an lift with many other people and did not think he was doing anything wrong.

“He lacked the knowledge and will factors,” Ms Al Hammadi said.

She added that his confessions were taken under pressure and duress and were therefore invalid.

“He was surrounded by 10 men when he exited the lift, and he was beaten and threatened by the police to confess.”

She argued that the case files lacked any proof that the girl suffered bruises or wounds to prove she was attacked, or that she resisted a molestation.

A verdict will be announced on October 28.
