UPDATE: Sharjah students walk to school to avoid car accident congestion

DUBAI // A major accident on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road caused extensive delays for commuters on Tuesday morning.

Dubai Traffic Police sources said two trucks collided and one swerved off the road, closing four lanes on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Minor injuries were reported.

The incident near National Paints in Sharjah heading towards Dubai has had a knock-on effect on surrounding roads resulting in severe congestion.

The accident caused such massive tailbacks in Sharjah that many students had to step out of their cars and walk to their schools in the Muawaileh area.

Sharjah police said traffic on some of the roads came to a standstill and traffic patrols and officers had to be deployed to deal with the situation.

Elsewhere there were the usual traffic delays on the E11 from Sharjah to Dubai as well as on Hessa Street heading to Sheikh Zayed Road.

In Abu Dhabi the E10 near Eastern Mangroves had slow-moving traffic.
