DUBAI // A woman who claims her husband threatened to kill her by holding a knife to her throat with his right hand must be lying because the husband is left-handed, a court heard yesterday.

“I have known him his entire life and he has always been left handed and incapable of using his right hand as firmly as his left, so how could he hold the knife in his right hand as she described,” P S, 28, a friend of the husband, asked the Criminal Court.

M B, 20, from Iran, is accused of threatening to kill his wife if she ignored his demand to abort her pregnancy. He has denied the charge, claiming that she made up the allegations as a form of blackmail to dissuade him from seeking a divorce.

His friend backed up the claim, telling the court that he had been present in five meetings involving the man, his wife and her mother during which the wife demanded Dh40 million in exchange for agreeing to the divorce.

“After negotiations, she agreed on Dh300,000,” said the friend.

His wife, N N, 23, told prosecutors that in April this year, while she was at her mother’s house, her husband grabbed a knife from the kitchen and said: “I will kill you and your baby if you don’t abort the pregnancy.”

In prosecution records she says her husband was holding the knife in his right hand.

Her mother, H R, said she witnessed the threat. “I was stunned when he held the knife and threatened her,” said the mother.

But the husband’s friend said that the wife had made up the allegation, and that she had also wrongly accused him of threatening to kill her.

A verdict is expected on December 17.
