ABU DHABI // A lawyer had his fees reduced from Dh10 million to Dh2.5 million by the appeals civil court for overcharging his client.
The court heard that the client was promised a share of a Dh50 million inheritance that was bequeathed to him and his brothers.
Although he expected more, he ended up receiving Dh5 million of it.
The lawyer, however, had calculated his fees based on the whole sum of the inheritance, which was worth more than Dh1 billion.
So, the client paid Dh10 million in legal fees to the lawyer, yet only received half of this back.
The client said he had paid the fee before he received his inheritance as he was not fully aware of the law.
The court of first instance rejected his first lawsuit, but the appeals court backed his claims.
It found that as the lawyer had only spent nine months working on the lawsuit, he did not deserve Dh10 million in fees.

The most expensive investment mistake you will ever make
When is the best time to start saving in a pension? The answer is simple – at the earliest possible moment. The first pound, euro, dollar or dirham you invest is the most valuable, as it has so much longer to grow in value. If you start in your twenties, it could be invested for 40 years or more, which means you have decades for compound interest to work its magic.
“You get growth upon growth upon growth, followed by more growth. The earlier you start the process, the more it will all roll up,” says Chris Davies, chartered financial planner at The Fry Group in Dubai.

Gender pay parity on track in the UAE
The UAE has a good record on gender pay parity, according to Mercer's Total Remuneration Study.
"In some of the lower levels of jobs women tend to be paid more than men, primarily because men are employed in blue collar jobs and women tend to be employed in white collar jobs which pay better," said Ted Raffoul, career products leader, Mena at Mercer. "I am yet to see a company in the UAE – particularly when you are looking at a blue chip multinationals or some of the bigger local companies – that actively discriminates when it comes to gender on pay."
Mr Raffoul said most gender issues are actually due to the cultural class, as the population is dominated by Asian and Arab cultures where men are generally expected to work and earn whereas women are meant to start a family.
"For that reason, we see a different gender gap. There are less women in senior roles because women tend to focus less on this but that’s not due to any companies having a policy penalising women for any reasons – it’s a cultural thing," he said.
As a result, Mr Raffoul said many companies in the UAE are coming up with benefit package programmes to help working mothers and the career development of women in general.
