ABU DHABI // Three kidnappers who demanded a Dh20,000 ransom to release their victim have each been sentenced to one year in jail by the Federal Supreme Court.
Yesterday, the court heard that the Bangladeshi victim was shopping in Safeer Mall when another man approached him and told him his friend was waiting in the car park.
He went outside and was asked to get in a car to drive him to meet his friend.
When he entered the vehicle, he was restrained and driven to a labour camp where he was beaten until he revealed phone numbers for his family.
They called his brother who lived in the UAE and demanded Dh20,000 or said they would kill him
They also called the victim’s family in Bangladesh and threatened them.
After 10 days of captivity, the victim managed to escape after the kidnapper who was guarding him fell asleep.
He contacted his brother, who took him to the police station to report the crime.
The kidnappers later called the brother and demanded Dh3,000.
In cooperation with the police, the brother agreed to meet them to hand over the money and police arrested them.
