UAE authorities announced 283 new cases of coronavirus late on Tuesday, taking the total number to 2,359.

In a tweet, the Ministry of Health and Prevention also said another 19 patients had recovered from the virus.

A total of 186 people in the Emirates have successfully beaten the infection, while 12 have died.

Authorities in the country continue to monitor the outbreak closely, enforcing widespread measures to counter its spread.

The pandemic, which began in Wuhan, China, has had a devastating impact on public health around the world.

As of Tuesday evening, more than 1.4 million people had contracted the disease and more than 80,000 had died.

Globally, almost 300,000 people have now recovered from the virus while about 47,000 patients remain in a serious or critical condition.

In other UAE developments on Tuesday, officials in Dubai announced that residents would no longer be allowed to walk their dogs outside as part of increased restrictions aimed at combating the virus.

Pet owners caught flouting the law will be stopped by patrols and could be hit with an on-the-spot fine.

Meanwhile, a doctor in the emirate also warned members of the public to avoid unnecessary trips to the supermarket.

Dr Ahmed Abdelhameed said people who shopped in crowded stores could help to spread the infection.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a month-long state of emergency for Tokyo and six other prefectures on Tuesday, as the number of cases in the country neared 4,000.

In the UK, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was reportedly in “good spirits” after being admitted to an intensive care unit in London on Monday evening.

A Downing Street spokesman said Mr Johnson had been stable overnight and was “receiving standard oxygen treatment and is breathing without any other assistance”.

“He has not required mechanical ventilation or non-invasive respiratory support,” the spokesman said.

Downing Street said Mr Johnson did not have pneumonia.
