ABU DHABI // Sweet shops in the capital are under scrutiny from inspectors ahead of the Eid Al Fitr holidays, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority said.

The authority has intensified evening inspections of confectionery shops as part of its goal of ensuring food safety, and has already disposed of 2.5 tonnes of low-quality sweets.

Inspectors focused on their most recent wave of inspections on the storage, preparation and sale of foods in shops and facilities that prepare sweets in Abu Dhabi city and its suburbs. They also inspected transport methods.

Recent inspections covered 94 facilities and resulted in 11 notices and 18 warnings, in addition to the sweets disposed of.

The authority also performed inspections in Al Ain city, covering 14 facilities and resulting in one notice, three warnings and one fine for non-compliance to standards.

Inspectors alerted sweet factory workers to the need to be vigilant when receiving raw materials, storing foods at adequate temperatures, cooking them safely and ensuring sweets are displayed at adequate temperatures to avoid food poisoning.

The authority is stepping up its regular and surprise inspections to sweet shops ahead of Eid, which sees increase demand for such confectionery.
