DUBAI // A grocery shop delivery worker who sexually assaulted a British housewife in her garden was jailed on Wednesday.
Although the 35-year-old housewife had accused the Indian delivery man of trying to rape her, he was charged with a sexual assault.
On May 31, the Briton ordered some items from a nearby shop and, when the 23-year-old attacker arrived, she allowed him into the garden.
“I took the items and paid him but he didn’t leave. He walked towards me then threw me down and tried to kiss and touch me,” the woman said.
She resisted him as he tried to touch her then screamed at him, threatening to call police.
“He then left,” she said, after which she called her husband, who contacted police.
The officer who was sent to the woman’s house said she had been drinking alcohol when he asked her about the incident.
“Then I went to the grocery shop and questioned the suspect. He denied her story and said that she offered him alcohol and he refused, so she fabricated the story,” said the officer, 32.
A forensic report confirmed that traces of the defendant’s DNA were found on the woman’s neck. It concluded that there must have been direct contact between the two for the DNA to be there.
The defendant denied a sex assault charge at Dubai Criminal Court last month.
But in court on Wednesday, he was sentenced to three months in jail, to be followed by deportation.
