SHARJAH // More than 1,000 establishments inspected this year failed to meet basic fire safety and security requirements.
Four inspection teams from the Sharjah Civil Defence Department (SCDD) carried out the surprise spot checks on 1,150 buildings in the emirate, Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National reported.
Brig Abdullah Al Suwaidi, the director general of the department, said most breaches were related to improper storage and failure to regularly check fire extinguishers.
Warnings and penalties are important, he said, because they allow these establishments to improve their safety procedures.
