SHARJAH // The counting of votes in the UAE’s first local election will be broadcast live on television from the Al Qasimia University Auditorium on Sunday night.
Counting will begin once the fourth day of polling concludes at 8pm on Sunday, according to the directives of the Supreme Committee for the Sharjah Consultative Council Elections.
Coverage of the counting process will be on all television networks and other media outlets of the Sharjah Media Corporation throughout the night until all results and winners have been announced.
One hundred and ninety-five candidates, including 43 women, are competing for the 21 elected seats. The other 21 seats will be filled by Sharjah Ruler Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi’s appointees.
Voting opened on Thursday, and continued throughout the weekend, with election committees encouraging voters to “Take Part in Decision Making”.
Mansour bin Nassar, chairman of the Supreme Committee for SCC Elections, urged all those registered to vote to cast their ballots before polling ends.
Six of the elected seats are in Sharjah city, with nine others split between Al Dhaid, Khor Fakkan and Kalba. There are two seats for Dibba Al Hisn, while Al Hamriya, Al Batayeh, Mleiha and Al Madam have one each.
