DUBAI // Six new water projects funded by the UAE in five countries will provide clean drinking water for 60,000 people.

The projects are taking place in Somalia, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Ghana and Benin, state news agency Wam said on Friday, following a five-year agreement between Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Establishment and UAE Water Aid Foundation.

“About 60,000 people will benefit from these projects,” said Mohammed Al Shamsi, acting executive director of the UAE Water Aid Foundation.

The assistance is in line with goals to achieve sustainable development for all, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and chairman of the board of trustees of the UAE Water Aid Foundation.

Ibrahim bu Melha, the Dubai Ruler’s advisor for humanitarian and cultural affairs and deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum charity, said: “Carrying out the water projects in the selected countries will contribute to providing clean, potable water to citizens there and will have positive effects in promoting security and stability.

“These countries have been selected as they are the areas in most need of water projects because of drought and water scarcity.

“These projects support the foundation’s efforts, which have developed solutions for water shortages in a number of countries by implementing projects to provide clean drinking water.”

The projects will use environmentally friendly technologies to provide water.

Mr Al Shamsi said: “We support studies and research to develop solutions for water production using solar power. We also finance and support water technology projects to combat drought.”
