ABU DHABI // A federal law that would regulate the possession of dangerous animals has been discussed by a Federal National Council committee.

The draft law would grant owners of exotic animals a month to report them to authorities, said Khaled bin Zayed, chairman of the committee, according to Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.

The draft law has been discussed with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and a final report on it will be examined next May, he said.

The committee discussed the regulation of wild animal possession in accordance with international laws.

One proposal has been to grant exotic animal owners a year to hand them over to authorities, in addition to reporting them. Not complying with the deadline stipulated in the law could leave violators facing penalties such as imprisonment or fines ranging from Dh10,000 to Dh100,000, said Ahmed Al Nuaimi, the committee rapporteur.
