SHARJAH // A census of the emirate’s population and infrastructure will begin later this year, officials have said.

The census will provide information on population and building numbers, allow local government departments to identify areas in need of attention and help development of future plans.

The first phase will start on October 20 and will run for around 30 days, during which time data will be collected about the number of buildings in the emirate.

The second phase, to start in December, will look at Sharjah’s population.

Data will be collected using iPads and the information will be verified to ensure its accuracy, said Amna Alzaruoni, IT manager at the Department of Statistics and Community Development.

According to the DSCD, personal information will be confidential and used for statistical purposes only and will not be shared with any public or private entities.

“The census results and its data will reflect positively on all walks of life in the emirate and will benefit present and future generations as the census outcomes will be used in developing and expanding projects to cope with Sharjah’s growing population and needs,” said Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani, chairman of the DSCD.

Last month, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed, the Ruler of Sharjah, issued Emiri decree No. 7 of 2015 to conduct a general census of the population, infrastructure, housing and other establishments in the emirate.
