ABU DHABI // Abu Dhabi Municipality has distributed fans, head covers and water to workers around the emirate to mark World Humanitarian Day.
The municipality’s Al Wathba centre held an event on Wednesday to highlight the department’s focus on the well-being of its workers.
In a statement the municipality said the occasion was an opportunity to stress the importance of providing all workers suitable living and working environments while highlighting the importance of implementing rules and legislations to protect them and maintain their health and safety.
World Humanitarian Day, which falls on August 19, was first commemorated in 2009 in memory of humanitarian workers who lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.
The designation came about as a result of the death of Sergio Vieira de Mello, a Brazilian UN diplomat, and 21 of his colleagues in Baghdad on the same date in 2003 as a result of a bomb that targeted the UN mission in Iraq.
