ABU DHABI // An attempt by immigrants to enter the UAE illegally by hiding in a lorry’s spare-tyre compartment was foiled by Abu Dhabi Customs.
Officials at the Mezyad crossing in Al Ain, along the UAE-Omani border, found the two people after suspecting the Arab driver of the vehicle of smuggling.
This lead to inspectors searching the vehicle.
“Illegal immigration attempts present one of the most dangerous operations facing Customs officers and negatively affect both the community and the state,” said Mohamed Khadem Al Hameli, acting director of the General Administration of Customs – Abu Dhabi.
Mr Al Hameli said some of the negative effects of illegal immigration included a rise of other crimes including assault, theft and murder.
“The country takes strict and more severe procedures against illegal immigrants and its partners,” he said.
