RAS AL KHAIMAH // Fish prices in the emirate increased on Saturday compared to the two previous days due to the scarcity of supplies.

Khalifa Al Muhairi, head of RAK’s fishing association, said the price increase was expected after the decision was made to ban fishing of Shaari and Safi fish, which resulted in decreased supplies.

Abdullah Mohammed, a fish merchant, said prices were always subject to supply and demand, adding that the ban on Shaari and Safi fishing also increased the price of other fish.

Fish market customer Mohammed Al Shamli called for close monitoring of prices to avoid any sharp increases. He said some fish merchants took advantage of the situation to hike prices. For instance, the price of Shakhibi fish increased from Dh20 to Dh40 per kilogram, although fishing it has not been banned, reported The National's Arabic-language sister paper, Al Ittihad.
